To ensure the industrial design, technical development and 3D modeling of a stereo camera housing used for creating 3D images for professional miners.
Objectives
CAE Mining commissioned our firm for our industrial design and complex assembly management expertise. Our goal was to design the housing of a stereoscopic camera and to secure its technical development. This sealed and waterproof housing used in mines aims at communicating information to a mining simulator to better plan the workflow. The design of the box had to guarantee an excellent handholding of the product to optimize the image capture inside the mines.

Approach
We reconsidered the manufacturing process suggested by our client and oriented it towards another one offering more technical possibilities, to be able to meet the product's waterproofing and shock absorption needs. With its robust appearance and mineral-inspired faceted visual language, the Sirovision has been designed to be injected in low-pressure polyurethane, providing a robust shell in key areas. Ergonomically shaped handles made from lower density urethane ensure a good hand grip and serve as a bumper. They are protecting the main case from impacts.
Our work methods and our partnership with the CAE team and their suppliers resulted in a perfect match of the housing with the provided mechanical and electronic assembly. From the visual design to the detailed development of the waterproof assemblies, we met all the requirements of our client and the mine workers.
Results
The CAE stereo camera is an excellent product for underground stereo imaging. It is lightweight, easy to handle and requires little training. The chemistry between the various parties involved made this project quickly ready for production and fully adapted to the end user. Our expertise in the manufacturing processes and our attention to details was a positive contribution for this revolutionary product for the mining industry.
